Final decisions by September 1, 2025
The International Human Rights Art Movement (IHRAM) issued a call for literary (poetry; short story and essay) and visual responses (submitted as hi-resolution jpegs) to this unique American moment - how you feel about it, what you think we can do, what form can and should resistance take, etc.
We received 335 submissions in poetry, short story, essay and visual work. We will accept around 40 pieces. Currently, our long-list of works is 140 pieces.
Work is being judged on quality, relevancy to the topic, and adherence to the IHRAM values: Beauty as a fundamental creative value; sincerity and vulnerability of presentation; opening doorways of engagement and celebrating diversity.
Only the creators have the courage to resist.
As Chinese Democracy Activist Wei Jingsheng, who spent 18 years in prison in China because of his advocacy for democratic reforms, said when he was at his lowest point, "only the artists stood with me."
What some of our writers said:
“I so appreciate your organization's quick response to assembling creative work at this crucial point in history. It helps me to feel less alone just to know you're collecting artists' responses. I know your publication will help inspire other artists to keep using their creative voices and talents to showcase the variety of ways our country is sliding toward authoritarianism." Jackie, WA
“Thank you so much for your submissions call for America’s Slide Toward Authoritarianism and all you’re doing to create a more just world.” Margo, CA
“I am grateful to find your invitation to submit work related to the unraveling of the United States in this moment. One of the ways I try to contribute to those of us affected is to help others name their own emotions in a time when nothing feels familiar.” Ann, MD
“Thank you for putting together this important anthology. I agree that artists have a critical role to play in resisting this administration's efforts.” Marcia, KS
“I'm delighted that I found your publication on Duotrope. And I'm really glad to see someone is addressing this crisis creatively!” Cathy, OR
“Thank you for creating this place for poet voices of resistance.” Leeland, WA
